NICET Water-Based Systems Layout (WBSL) - Level 4
The Water-Based Systems Layout certification program is for engineering technicians engaged in the layout and detailing of water-based systems that must meet code and statutory requirements. The candidates for NICET certification at Level IV in Water-Based Systems Layout should have the knowledge, experience, and skills needed to supervise other technicians.

- Safety and Environmental Compliance (Questions related to these tasks make up 1-11% of the exam.)
- Manage compliance with environmental requirements.
- Manage personnel safety.
- Contract Documents (Questions related to these tasks make up 1-9% of the exam.)
- Survey Existing Conditions (Questions related to these tasks make up 1-11% of the exam.)
- Evaluate existing complex fire protection systems.
- Plan internal system obstruction investigations.
- Codes and Standards (Questions related to these tasks make up 29-39% of the exam.)
- Interpret the intent of fire protection codes/standards.
- Identify the differences between NFPA standards and FM Global data sheets.
- Address revisions between new and previous editions of codes/standards.
- System Layout (Questions related to these tasks make up 35-45% of the exam.)
- Layout sprinkler systems with special occupancy requirements (per NFPA 13).
- Mitigate corrosion issues.
- Resolve fire pump system issues.
- Resolve issues with multiple considerations (e.g., changes in occupancy, system types, density, water supply).
- Resolve water supply issues.
- Evaluate system hydraulics.
- Hydraulically calculate complex systems.
- Apply advanced concepts of bracing/restraints (e.g., seismic, end head restraints).
- Coordinate complex interfaces with other fire protection systems.
- Incorporate pre-engineered system layouts (e.g., kitchen hood systems).
- Project Management (Questions related to these tasks make up 5-15% of the exam.)
- Oversee management of multiple projects.
- Manage subcontractors.
- Develop project budgets.
- Monitor project progress and manage expenses.
- Prepare complex maintenance or testing plans.
